About

Nature was the first to master light

Lūmm translates it. A Toronto studio that designs, builds and installs custom lighting, founded in 2020 by Mark Duarte.

Chapter 1: The idea

Light was here first

Long before the first fixture, before the first sketch, there was light in the natural world. The low burn of an ember. The moving sheen across a tide. Dappled brightness beneath a canopy. The slow colour of an aurora. Nature has been shaping light far longer than we have.

Lūmm begins there. We study how light lives in the world, then translate it into the places people gather, rest and work. Every fixture we design, build and install carries an idea drawn from nature, so the light in a space feels inevitable rather than added.

The Lunaris concept sheet: sketches, materials and design intent for a brass and smoked-glass pendant

Our purpose is to translate the natural world into light that makes a space feel intentional, elevated and alive.

Chapter 2: The maker

Mark Duarte, founder

Two decades learning how light meets architecture

Mark Duarte spent twenty years as an electrician. He learned where light falls, what it reveals and what it hides, and how often it is decided last.

In 2020 he founded Lūmm in Toronto to make it the first decision instead. Under one studio he united craft and intention, working in metal, glass and light alongside the architects, designers and homeowners who think the same way.

He still leads every project hands-on.

Chapter 3: The method

One element. One partner.

Every Lūmm project is given one element: Ember, Tide, Canopy or Aurora. It is chosen for the space and the people who will live in it, and it carries the design from the first sketch to the last fitting: form, material, finish and light.

  • TideDepth · Calm
  • CanopyShelter · Growth
  • AuroraWonder · Night

One project manager carries each commission from concept to installation. Where others fit fixtures to a plan, we design one considered element and see it through, so the idea in the drawing is the idea in the room.

Chapter 4: What we hold to

Five pillars

Rooted in nature
Every design carries a natural reference. Light is translated from the world, never decoration for its own sake.
Made by hand
We sculpt metal, glass and light into one cohesive element, tested rigorously before it leaves the studio.
One trusted partner
A dedicated project manager carries each project from concept to installation, so the vision holds throughout.
Quietly precise
Submittal packages, certification and engineering rigour sit beneath the beauty. Precision is felt, not announced.
Made in Canada, mindfully
Responsible sourcing and local artisans, a lighter footprint, and lasting work over disposable trend.
